Welcome Night
“From hill and cloud and heaven
The hues of evening died;
Night welled through lane and hollow
And hushed the countryside…”
Personal work inspired by my love of the nether skies and the personification of Night, described across the centuries as shrouded in a cloak of darkness accompanied by the trailing stars…
Argonautica 6. 752 :
“Welcome Nox brings on the star-heralding shadows.”
Dionysiaca 18. 160 ff :
“Silent Nyx shrouded the west in her own colour, and scored the sky across with her own starry cloak.”
Dionysiaca 25. 570 :
“Quiet Nyx covered all the earth in her dark shades.”
In all, it took 4 tries over 3 weeks drawing our otherworldly steed at different angles before this shimmering, dark, oil-slicked beauty came into focus. Worth it.
